The US Department of State announced Wednesday that former Ecuador President Abdala Bucaram has been designated under § 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, which effectively bars his entry into the US.

Citing Bucaram’s alleged involvement in corruption as the reasoning behind the decision, the State Department noted that Bucaram engaged in multiple corrupt acts, including “accepting bribes and stealing public funds,” during his tenure as president and is yet to be held accountable for his “betrayal of the public trust.”

The designation also bars entry to Bucaram’s wife, María Rosa Pulley Vergara, and their three sons.

Bucaram served as Ecuador president for just six months between August 1996 to February 1997. After nationwide protests due to accusations of corruption, he was removed from office on grounds of alleged mental incapacity.
