The United Nations (UN) on Wednesday cautioned that the escalating aerial attacks in Sudan are killing children, striking UN facilities, and damaging schools.

Two children were killed, and 13 were injured in a drone strike on a mosque in Al-Rahad, North Kordofan, where all the victims were students at the adjoining school. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric lamented on the tragedy, stating, “The fact that we have to reiterate almost every day that civilians and civilian infrastructure, places of worship, schools, and hospitals cannot and should not be targeted is a tragedy into itself.”

Drone strikes against UN aid trucks delivering food assistance in North Kordofan were also recently reported by the Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Denise Brown.

The Sudanese Civil War, which erupted in 2023, has sparked the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, including famine and severe environmental instability like floods and droughts. Consequently, around 30 million people need assistance. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has propelled the country into a dire state of turmoil, with millions displaced and vulnerable to disease, sexual crimes, and violence.

Airstrikes have been one of the primary methods of control employed both by the RSF and the SAF. According to Al Jazeera, most of the drones are smuggled in by a network of foreign backers via land, sea, and air, bypassing official embargoes, as foreign states exploit the situation to their advantage. There have been at least 1,003 drone strikes from the first day of the war to January 23, 2026. Since April 2023, there have been at least 3,017 drone-related deaths, most occurring in North Darfur, West Kordofan, and North Kordofan states.

The death toll in Sudan continues to rise, especially after the Trump administration decided to freeze US foreign aid “that is not fully aligned with the foreign policy of the President of the United States.” The recent aerial attacks have occurred close to key supply routes, endangering humanitarian workers and civilians.
