United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, addressed on Sunday the urgent need for immediate humanitarian assistance and support for the Syrian people in the wake of the Assad regime’s fall upon his arrival in Damascus.

In a statement underscoring the profound changes and the challenges ahead, Pedersen stressed that the international community must prioritize delivering aid to alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting millions of Syrians. This followed the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria, which made an urgent appeal to all parties involved in the Syrian conflict to comply fully with international humanitarian law and safeguard civilians from hostilities.

Pedersen emphasized the importance of ensuring that refugees wishing to return to their homeland receive the necessary support, highlighting the critical role of humanitarian aid in stabilizing the region. The envoy emphasized that any political process must be inclusive and led by the Syrians, with international help to ensure its success.

In addition to humanitarian concerns, Pedersen pointed to the urgent need for economic recovery in Syria. He expressed optimism that sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union, and other nations might be lifted to facilitate rebuilding efforts.

“Economic recovery needs to be addressed quickly,” he stated, hoping for swift removal of barriers to rebuilding.

Furthermore, Pedersen discussed the necessity of establishing justice and accountability for past crimes through a credible judicial system, ensuring that processes are fair and free from retaliation. The envoy concluded by noting a growing international consensus in support of Syria, reflecting his meetings in Aqaba that revealed a unified desire to assist the nation during this pivotal time.

“There is a unified position on wanting to help and support Syria,” Pedersen remarked, highlighting the collaborative spirit emerging from international dialogues.

As Syria embarks on this new chapter, the call for humanitarian support remains a top priority, aiming to provide relief and hope for a nation eager for stability and peace.
