The UN Human Rights Council voted Friday to launch an investigation into Venezuela regarding human rights violations within the country.
According to the resolution, approximately 6,000 people have been killed since January 2018 due to government security operations. There have also been reports of extreme use of force against peaceful protesters.
The vote included 19 members in favor of the investigation and seven opposed. The Human Rights Council will create a fact-finding authority dedicated to investigating judicial decisions, citizen disappearances, unethical arrests and other problematic actions that have occurred in Venezuela since 2014.
