The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Islamic Republic of Iran unveiled a report on Friday alleging widespread human rights violations committed by the Iranian government, particularly in response to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests that began on September 16, 2022.

“Woman, Life, Freedom” protests were sparked by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the morality police. Amini’s arrest, related to non-compliance with Iran’s mandatory hijab laws, led to nationwide demonstrations calling for freedom, equality and accountability. The Fact-Finding Mission’s investigation documents a range of alleged violations and crimes, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, torture, rape, enforced disappearances and gender persecution.

According to the findings, these actions disproportionately affected women, children and members of ethnic and religious minorities. The Mission notes a pattern of excessive force used by security forces, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries among protestors. It also highlighted government obstruction of justice and dissemination of disinformation aimed at discrediting protesters.

The report concludes, calling for immediate action to address the situation, including urging the Iranian government to halt repression, release arbitrarily detained individuals and ensure accountability for perpetrators. The report also encourages the international community to support efforts towards justice and uphold the rights of those affected by these alleged violations.
