The UN body responsible for nuclear energy policy issued a resolution on Thursday ordering Iran to disclose their stockpile of enriched uranium and allow inspections of nuclear sites bombed by the United States and Israel five months ago.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a 180-member international organization accountable to the UN General Assembly and UN Security Council. The 35-member Board of Governors is able to shape the policies of the organization, as well as issue non-binding recommendations.

On Tuesday the United States, Britain, France, and Germany submitted Draft Resolution US-E3, asking the Board of Governors to demand information regarding Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and the status of their bombed nuclear sites. The resolution officially passed at a closed-door meeting today with 19 votes for and 12 abstentions. Three nations, Russia, China, and Niger, voted against the resolution.

The resolution comes after a report published by the IAEA asserted that inspection of the Iranian attack sites is “long overdue” and “critical.”

Iran maintains that its nuclear program exists solely for peaceful purposes and warns that this resolution is a “major mistake” that will adversely affect its relationship with IAEA. The IAEA and Iran had reached an agreement in September allowing for inspections of the attacked nuclear sites to proceed, but Iran has since claimed the agreement to be void.

Sanctions on Iran have also been in place since September after being reimposed for Iran’s “significant non-performance of their non-proliferation obligations.”

Since the US and Israeli attacks on the nuclear sites, Iran has suspended all cooperation with the IEAE and said inspections must first be approved by the nation’s Supreme National Security Council.
