UN Secretary-General António Guterres made a statement Wednesday calling for fresh talks to help rebuild trust between Cyprus island’s two communities who remain divided, in a move to resolve the decades-long tension and find a sustainable political solution.
Guterres explained the role of the UN, as well as the significance of a peaceful resolution to the lengthy division between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, stating:
Guterres also heard from many citizens, who clearly expressed their desire for a future “defined not by division, but by cooperation, opportunity and peace.”
The upcoming meeting will follow a 5+1 format, which means it includes both Christodolides and Erhürman, along with Greece, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and the UN as guarantors. The date has not yet been announced, but it will follow “adequate preparations” and consultation “to create the conditions for the meeting’s success.” Those involved will need to work to overcome the groups’ differing visions for the island.
Guterres also highlighted a number of important ongoing efforts to manage the conflict. The most significant is the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) which was established in 1964 “to prevent a recurrence of fighting, promote law and order, and contribute to a return to normal conditions.”
The other critical organization is the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), which seeks to recover and identify remains of 2002 individuals who went missing during various conflicts, to return them to their families.
Despite the recent progress, there are also inflamed tensions over the EU appointing a “representative” for Cyprus at the request of the Greek Cypriots. The Turkish Cypriot administration has refused to accept this decision’s legitimacy and denounced the EU for its involvement in the country’s domestic affairs.
Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, but it is only the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government in the south that directly benefits.
Cyprus has a long history of inter-communal conflict and has been officially divided into two parts since 1974. After a decade of violent conflict, Türkiye seized the north third of the island in response to a Greece-backed military coup seeking to take full territorial control. The UNFICYP patrols the division, with the hopes the peace process will result in a more unified future.
It is unclear how this issue will develop, but Erhürman has indicated his people’s “strong will for a just and lasting solution.”
