British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday announced that the UK will airdrop aid into Gaza and evacuate children for more specialized medical aid.

In a public statement, Starmer claimed that the UK is “working urgently” with the Jordanian authorities to get aid into planes and delivered to Gaza. The British leader condemned the mass starvation of the Palestinians by Israel, calling this “utterly horrifying” and “completely unjustifiable.”

According to UNICEF, children and adult civilians are actively starving to death in Gaza, with at least 80 children confirmed dead as a result of severe malnutrition. UNICEF warned that without immediate access to humanitarian aid, “preventable” deaths of children are going to rise drastically.

Starvation of civilians through the blockade or denial of humanitarian aid may constitute war crimes and potentially genocide. Under Article 6(c) of the Rome Statute, for example, “deliberately inflicting on a group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” qualifies as genocide.

While genocide necessitates the highest burden of proof, many scholars argue that patterns of targeting children through food deprivation, especially if militarily disproportionate, could meet the threshold of genocide. According to Nimer Sultany, for example, using starvation as a weapon – particularly against an occupied population – serves as strong evidence of intent to destroy a group in whole or in part.

Additionally, Starmer stated that he is working closely with allies to find a pathway to peace, which must come in combination with the recognition of a Palestinian state. The statement comes days after French President Emmanuel Macron stated that France will recognize Palestine with the announcement to be made symbolically at the United Nations General Assembly.
