Former UK Metropolitan Police Officer Wayne Couzens, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sarah Everard last year, has been further charged with four counts of indecent exposure on Friday.
Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Special Crime Division Head Rosemary Ainslie noted that the alleged incidents took place between January and February of last year and that Couzens is scheduled to appear at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on April 13.
The charges follow the UK Ministry of the Interior’s investigation into whether the police missed any “red flags” that could have shed light on Couzens’ potential for murder.
Everard was abducted and killed in March 2021. Couzens was accused of using his police identification and COVID-19 restrictions to falsely arrest Everard. He told Everard that she had broken lockdown rules, then drove her outside London and subsequently raped and killed her.
Everard’s murder sparked worldwide outrage and protests condemning violence against women. Many women posted on social media about their own experiences feeling unsafe while walking home alone. Earlier this month, the police were found to have breached the rights of organizers who hosted a vigil in London to mark the one-year anniversary of Everard’s death.
