US President Donald Trump issued an executive order Monday imposing sanctions on Iran targeting arms sales.

The US State Department issued a fact sheet on the sanctions, which are focused on the sale of weapons and materials to Iran. Under “Nuclear Related Measures,” these sanctions are imposed on specific individuals and groups, which, according to the Departments of State, Treasury and Commerce, are involved in nuclear-related activities and operations in Iran. Under “Missile Related Measures,” the sanctions target missile development and two entities and three individuals involved in the production and support of military-grade, dual-use goods for Iran’s missile-development program.

Under “Conventional Arms-Related Measures,” the sanctions target Iran’s provision of weapons, training and funding to groups including terrorist organizations and Iranian partners across the Middle East. This support is in direct violation of the UN arms embargo on Iran. The sanctions specifically target Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro: “Our placing sanctions on Maduro today is a warning that should be heard clearly worldwide: no matter who you are, if you violate the UN arms embargo on Iran, you risk sanctions.”

These additional sanctions imposed by the US on Iran have not been met with support from the other Security Council members, who argue that the US lost authority to do so by withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and reimposing sanctions on Iran at that time.
