Thousands of people marched in Madrid Friday supporting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez after the publication of his letter on Twitter stating he needs “time to reflect” after a court in Madrid started a preliminary investigation against his wife on alleged corruption charges.

The case was brought forward by a group called “Manos Limpias” (Clean Hands), after several articles on digital medias alleged irregularities on account of Begoña Gomez. In his letter, Pedro Sanchez described Manos Limpias as a “far-right organization,” and called the case brought against his wife as an “operation of harassment and demolition by land, sea and air” that aims to weaken him personally and politically by attacking his wife, Begoña Gomez. Gomez had not yet issued a statement at the time of publication.

In a press relase, Manos Limpias General Secretary Bernard Remon, said the behavior of the Spanish Prime Minister was”totally unacceptable.” and denied that Manos Limpias to was a “far right organization.” According to his statement, it is the court who must decide whether the journalistic information the complaint was based on was true or not, and thus whether the process must continue or not.

Political commentators and analysts have viewed Sanchez’s letter to be a move aiming at gathering political support, and the people rallying in Madrid were there to show such support. Critics say it was an attempt steer attention away from the charges against his wife.
