Climate change protesters from various groups gathered in Bern, Switzerland, on Saturday petitioning for reformations to current climate change legislation ahead of the upcoming national election. Over 60,000 people attended the protest and were particularly concerned about the impact agriculture and fossil fuels have on the future. It is claimed that the Swiss government is not doing enough to slow the pace of climate change.

In June the government drafted a long term strategy to climate, with the main goal being to slash emissions to net zero by 2050, voters agreed on this in 2021 but not enough steps have been taken to achieve this goal. The strategy involves 10 principles that will shape Swiss climate policy and will set climate goals for various industries such as architecture, transport and aviation. It also aims to balance negative emissions through CO2 capture as mentioned in the European Green Deal from the European Commission.

According to data from Climate Action Tracker, Switzerland rates as insufficient in almost all areas of climate action meaning that they need “substantial improvements” to limiting warming to 1.5C. If the Swiss government passes the CO2 Succession Act there would be a major improvement in their overall rating and would bring the carbon emissions down to a more manageable level. Furthermore, Switzerland has had record high temperatures in September and their glaciers have been shrinking by 10% in two years – so the need for action is increasing. Environmental parties such as the Green Party were present at the demonstration on Saturday and called for support in the upcoming elections as they do not have a seat.

Current climate legislation will not come into effect until 2025.
