Ali Yerlikaya, Minister of the Interior for the Turkish government, announced Tuesday the arrest of 33 individuals under Operation Mole, which is concerned with the suppression of espionage activity against Türkiye. The arrests took place across 57 different addresses and eight provinces. Those arrested have been accused of working for the Israeli government, including some charges of kidnapping and assault. The Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has had an increasingly hostile relationship Israel with ever since war broke out in Gaza in October 2023. Ali Yerlikaya added in his post that, “We will never allow espionage activities to be conducted against the national unity and solidarity of our country.”

Erdogan has maintained his support for Gaza since the re-eruption of the war and has been increasingly vocal about his disapproval of Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions. On November 15, 2023, Erdogan expanded his criticism to include Israel’s western supporters, claiming that the Palestinians are facing a genocide due to Israel’s actions.

The recent arrests in Türkiye involving suspected Israeli espionage activities reflect the government’s stern commitment to preventing any outside involvement in their internal affairs. Israeli officials said they plan to assassinate Hamas leaders across the world, including in Türkiye. Türkiye has housed Hamas officials in the past, and Erdogan warned that there would be “serious consequences” if Israel were to attack Hamas leaders on Turkish soil. Both Israel and Türkiye have recalled their ambassadors.
