South Korean law enforcement have apprehended 77 individuals as part of an investigation of a suspected network of industrial espionage, per exclusive reporting from the Yonhap news agency. The individuals were allegedly involved in 35 distinct incidents, exposing the concerning magnitude of this unlawful operation.

The investigation primarily targeted domestic companies, but it also exposed eight cases related to the leakage of technology secrets to foreign countries, particularly China. The National Police Agency, as stated by Yonhap, affirmed the findings but was not available for immediate response.

One particularly notable arrest involved an individual who had transitioned from working for a company in South Korea to joining a Chinese organization. The suspect is alleged to have disclosed sensitive corporate data in exchange for substantial financial incentives. The report states that the Chinese company promised significant amounts of money (representing a monetary value that matches hundreds of thousands of dollars) to cover various expenses, including housing, education, and living costs, as compensation for the intelligence provided.

The information provided by the police indicates a significant rise in international cases in comparison to a previous investigation conducted twelve months ago. The number of incidents involving the compromise of sensitive information for foreign gains has doubled, highlighting the growing threat of industrial espionage faced by South Korea.

Law enforcement agencies are expected to continue their efforts, pursuing legal action against those involved in similar schemes. The South Korean government, in collaboration with industry stakeholders, will likely intensify initiatives to bolster cybersecurity protocols.
