Jurist Secretary of State Pompeo sanctions Myanmar military leaders for ‘gross human rights violations’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo publicly designated four members of Myanmar’s military on Tuesday. The public designation, made under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2018, means the four individuals and their immediate family members may not enter the US.

Pompeo cited gross human rights violations, including the extra-judicial killings and ethnic cleansing of Rohingya in Rakhine, as the reason for the public designation.

We remain concerned that the Burmese government has taken no actions to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations and abuses, and there are continued reports of the Burmese military committing human rights violations and abuses throughout the country.

The four military members who have been publicly designated are: Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, Deputy Commander-in-Chief Soe Winn, Brigadier General Than Oo, and Brigadier General Aung Aung.
