A Russian soldier Monday was sentenced to life in prison for killing an 62-year-old unarmed civilian during the Battle of Sumy, in Ukraine’s northeast, after pleading guilty to charges of premeditated murder and violating the laws and customs of war.
Ukraine’s Solomianskyi District Court of Kyiv sentenced Sergeant Vadim Shishimarin after prosecutors presented evidence that Shishimarim shot the unarmed civilian, who was riding a bicycle, in the town of Chupakhivka, meters from the civilian’s home. Before pleading guilty, Shishimarin described the incident to Ukraine’s Security Service, saying that he was part of a convoy designed to “intimidate” the local population and shot the civilian while fleeing from an attack.
The court imposed the maximum sentence for Shishimarin’s crimes after judge Serhiy Agafonov told the courtroom “Given that the crime committed is a crime against peace, security, humanity and the international legal order… the court does not see the possibility of imposing a (shorter) sentence.”
Shishimarin’s sentence is the first given over war crimes committed during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which have been documented by many organizations, including the International Criminal Court and Human Rights Watch. This sentence also comes after Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova announced her intention to charge 10 Russian soldiers over mass civilian killings in Bucha. More indictments and legal proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.
