The Russian Investigative Committee (RIC) announced an investigation Tuesday into alleged terrorist attacks in the Belgorod, Russia–close to the Russia-Ukraine border. A separatist group, known as the Freedom of Russia Legion, have claimed responsibility for Monday’s incursion onto Russian soil. The Ukrainian government denies any involvement.
The RIC claimed the incursion caused injuries to residents and property damage, stating, “Residential and administrative buildings and civilian infrastructure facilities came under mortar and artillery fire…Several civilians were injured as a result of these criminal acts.” The RIC is investigating “terrorist acts, encroachment on the life of law enforcement officers, attempted murder, intentional destruction or damage to property, illegal arms trafficking and explosives” under the Russian Criminal Code.
Defense Ministry Spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov confirmed the incursion, stating, “[O]n May 22, after intensive artillery bombardments of the Kozinka international checkpoint, and also some other civilian facilities in the Graivoronsky district of the Belgorod Region, a Ukrainian nationalist formation intruded into the territory of the Russian Federation.”
The deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev disputed Ukraine’s denial of involvement, saying:

There have been conflicting reports of continued activities by the Freedom of Russia Legion in Belgorod throughout Tuesday.Whatever chatter you hear from Kiev about how sabotage attacks of this kind have nothing to do with them, it is all a lie, of course. An absolute lie. The responsibility for them [acts of sabotage] lies with the Kiev regime and ultimately with its sponsors across the ocean, i.e. Washington, and the European Union countries together with states like Britain and others. This is their direct and immediate responsibility.
