Romania’s last operational nuclear reactor was shut down on August 13 after record-low water levels in the Danube threatened the availability of cooling water at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant. The shutdown has left Romania temporarily without nuclear power generation and prompted the government to take emergency measures to maintain electricity supplies.
Nuclearelectrica, the state-owned operator of the Cernavodă plant, began the controlled shutdown of Unit 2 on August 13, citing the critically low flow of the Danube. Unit 1 had already been taken offline in late July because of the same conditions. The two reactors, each with a capacity of approximately 700 megawatts, normally provide around 20 percent of Romania’s electricity.
