The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued a statement Tuesday urging those involved in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war to follow the requirements of international humanitarian law.
The ICRC is a humanitarian group delivering aid to people experiencing violence across the world. In addition to providing aid to those displaced in Gaza, the ICRC has been assisting people in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
This statement comes after reports that a fleet of seven trucks delivering supplies to Gaza was struck by a blast, resulting in damage to two of the vehicles. After the setback, the fleet was able to deliver the supplies to Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa. This aid comes after the Palestine Ministry of Health stated its health system was collapsing just weeks ago.
Much focus remains on Al-Shifa, as the Israel Defense Force (IDF) claims it is a central operating area of Hamas. However, Hamas stated the hospital is only being used as a place for shelter and medical care for Palestinians harmed amidst the conflict. Last week, an attack on ambulances near Al-Shifa hospital led the Palestinian Red Crescent to deem the attack a war crime, while the IDF claimed they successfully targeted a Hamas terrorist cell reported to be using an ambulance.
The IDF reported Gaza received 96 aid trucks on Tuesday, bringing essentials like food, water, and medicine. Since the start of the conflict, the IDF claims more than 600 humanitarian aid trucks have entered Gaza.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for a ceasefire on Monday, joined by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, as the Palestinian death toll has risen to more than 10,000.
