The National Prosecutor’s Office of Poland announced Thursday that it brought charges against a man suspected of espionage for Russia and an alleged plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The investigation was carried out by both Ukrainian and Polish agencies.

The report states that the man, a Polish national identified as Paweł K, expressed a willingness to act for Russian intelligence and was in communication with Russian citizens who were directly involved in the war in Ukraine. His tasks allegedly included collecting information on the security of the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport. He is also accused of helping Russian special services coordinate a potential attack on Zelensky.

The man was arrested in Poland and, if found guilty, faces up to eight years in prison.

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin said on X (formerly Twitter):

This case underscores the persistent threat Russia poses not only to Ukraine and Ukrainians but to the entire free world. The Kremlin’s criminal regime is constantly trying to undermine European and global security. It organizes and carries out sabotage operations on the territory of other sovereign states.
Zelensky previously said that he has been the subject of six assassination attempts in the last few years. Included among the attempts was the claim that, on the first day of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Moscow airdropped special forces into Kyiv to assassinate him.
