Peru Monday detained six police generals amid an ongoing investigation into the alleged crimes of former President Pedro Castillo. The anti-corruption unit of Peru’s attorney general’s office Monday detained announced that the proceedings were carried out by prosecutor Luis Martinez and included 26 searches across the country. The public prosecutor’s office also said that the police seized “documents and devices” during a raid of the home of Castillo’s former Defense Minister Walter Ayala within the framework of the ongoing investigation.
Pedro Castillo was accused in November by former Peruvian Army General Jose Vizcarra and former Peruvian Air Force Commander Jorge Chaparro of forcefully promoting unqualified police and army officers. Castillo is also being investigated for influence peddling and has been accused of six different charges of corruption, all of which he has refused. Peru’s Vice President Dina Boluarte was sworn in as President after Castillo was ousted on December 7 after he tried to illegally dissolve the Peruvian Congress. Peruvians across the country have demonstrated against the new government, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 people and the shutdown of the country’s key infrastructure.
