The eldest son of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the governing party’s presidential candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported receiving threats and insults Saturday after their phone numbers were leaked.
José Ramón López Beltrán, Obrador’s son, addressed the issue on X (formerly Twitter). He highlighted the invasion of privacy and its potential danger to his family’s security. He mentioned that the incident began with a letter containing threats and lies addressed to the president and his children. He also expressed confusion about why his phone number was exposed and emphasized that he had no involvement in the situation. Additionally, he lamented the continuous invasion of his privacy, including harassment through the use of drones, cameras, and strangers sent to his house.
Presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum and the party’s secretary general, Citlalli Hernández, echoed López Beltrán’s concerns. They confirmed that their phone numbers had also been leaked, leading to insulting calls and offensive messages.
Last Friday, Obrador defended his decision to reveal a New York Times (NYT) reporter’s phone number during a press briefing. This action was in response to a report from the NYT accusing Obrador of receiving campaign funds from the Sinaloa drug cartel in 2006. However, the US Department of Justice clarified that there is no investigation into Obrador.
