US officials announced Tuesday that Mexican citizen Hector Alejandro Cabrera Fuentes was arrested in Miami, Florida, for allegedly spying on the US government on behalf of Russia.

Fuentes was allegedly recruited by the Russian government in 2019 and asked to rent a specific property in Miami-Dade County. He was told to do this under an assumed name and not to tell his family anything. The Russian official he was in contact with approved of his housing arrangements and told him to meet him when he returned to Russia.

Fuentes returned to Russia this month and allegedly met with the official who “provided Fuentes with a physical description of a U.S. Government source’s vehicle and told Fuentes to locate the car, obtain the source’s vehicle license plate number, and note the physical location of the source’s vehicle.” Once he had this information he was to return to Russia in April or May and report his findings.

On February 14, Fuentes and his wife allegedly carried out the plan set forth by the Russian official. They were caught attempting to leave the country after the mission was completed. Fuentes then admitted to photographing the US government’s source’s vehicle and showed messages from the Russian official initiating contact.
