US District Judge Brian Cogan on Wednesday sentenced Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín Guzmán, known as “El Chapo,” to life in prison plus 30 years and ordered him to forfeit 12.6 billion dollars.
Guzmán ran one of the largest narco-cartels in Mexico and as recently as 2009 was listed on Forbes’ list of the world’s richest men. In 2017 he was extradited to the US and in February 2019, he was convicted of distribution of narcotics, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering. The life sentence was the minimum allowed under current law.
Guzmán has previously been incarcerated in and escaped from two maximum-security prisons in Mexico and will likely be incarcerated at the Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado, a super-maximum prison known as ADX Florence. No one has escaped since its opening in 1994.
