Tens of thousands of Moroccans rallied in Rabat, on Sunday to protest against Israel’s war on Gaza. Protestors took to the streets to express their solidarity with the people of Palestine and their anger towards US support of the war. Massive crowds of demonstrators wave Palestinian flags while chanting for a “Free Gaza.”
Israel’s siege on Gaza has killed and injured thousands since Israel broke the 2-month ceasefire on March 18, with devastation increasing by the day. UN experts call for states to hold Israel accountable for their alleged violations of international humanitarian law. Israeli attacks on civilians, humanitarian workers, and journalists, as well as the blockade of all goods and aid to Gaza, may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The inaction over the ongoing Israeli violations of international humanitarian law has prompted many people to bring their voices to the streets. This demonstration in Morocco is one of many pro-Palestine rallies within the past week. Similar protests have erupted across the region, including in Tunisia and Yemen.
Further anger was expressed at Morocco’s decision to normalize ties with Israel. In 2020, Morocco, the US, and Israel signed the Abraham Accords establishing diplomatic political, and economic ties amongst the nations. Despite the agreement, public sentiment towards Israel has remained largely negative. Abdelhak El Arabi, advisor to Morocco’s former Prime Minister, predicts growing public animosity until the hostilities in Gaza cease.
Organizers are also voicing their outrage at the US for the Trump administration’s role in the war on Gaza. They condemn Trump’s proposal for the redevelopment of Gaza, which would displace millions of Palestinians. Additional concerns are raised regarding the US government’s pursuit and detention of pro-Palestinian student activists.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last November. The ICC Prosecutor accused Netanyahu of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Additionally, there is an ongoing International Court of Justice (ICJ) case against Israel alleging the crime of genocide in Gaza.
Enforcement of these international courts is limited. They rely on member states to uphold their decisions and ensure Israeli accountability. Recently on April 5, Hungary announced its decision to withdraw from the Rome Statute and the ICC after hosting Netanyahu.
