Amnesty International on Tuesday called on Malian authorities to reveal the fate and whereabouts of politician Mountaga Tall and his son, Cheick Mamadou Tall, six months after both men went missing in Mali’s capital city, Bamako.

Tall is a lawyer and the leader of the National Congress for Democratic Initiative (CNID), an opposition party in Mali. Amnesty International describes him as a key figure in Mali’s move toward democracy in the 1990s. He was also part of the M5-RFP, a movement that played a major role in the 2020 protests against President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, which ended with his removal by the military. More recently, Tall issued legal challenges over the 2025 decree dissolving all political parties. He also served as defense counsel for former Prime Minister Moussa Mara, who was jailed by the country’s military leadership.

Amnesty International reports that on May 3, armed men abducted Tall from his home. Tall’s eldest son then went then missing on May 16 after he reportedly left to deliver personal belongings to his father. The fate of both men remains unknown.

The two disappearances came one week after attacks on Bamako were carried out by al-Qaeda-linked groups on April 25. Mali’s military court announced that politicians and soldiers had been arrested as part of an investigation into the attacks. Shortly after Tall went missing, a former soldier reportedly accused him of involvement in the attacks.

Marceau Sivieude, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, called on Tuesday for action to be taken:

The Malian authorities cannot continue to evade their responsibility to independently, impartially and transparently investigate the disappearances of Mountaga and Cheick Mamadou Tall. Six months of uncertainty and anguish for their family must end. The authorities must urgently disclose what happened to them and ensure that those suspected to be responsible are held accountable…If Mountaga Tall and his son are detained by the authorities, their whereabouts and proof that they are alive must be disclosed immediately…If they are suspected of having committed an offence, they must be promptly brought before a judge, informed of the specific charges against them and afforded all fair trial guarantees. Otherwise, they must be immediately released.
The African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and the International Conference of Bars (representing bar associations in 42 French-speaking nations) have also called for answers. Human Rights Watch reports that Malian authorities have neither acknowledged detaining the men nor provided information on their whereabouts.

Mali is part of the United Nation’s International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. Article 1 of the convention holds that “No one shall be subjected to enforced disappearance” and further states that “No exceptional circumstances whatsoever…may be invoked as a justification for enforced disappearance.”
