The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales convicted Sahayb Abu on Friday for attempting to carry out a terrorist attack after he created pro-Islamic state music videos and purchased weaponry online.

The police first began investigating Abu last March when his “extremist mindset” drew their attention. Throughout the next few months, Abu “purchased a number of items that gave investigators cause for further concern—a lock knife, a ballistic vest, two balaclavas, fingerless gloves, a camo-print fisherman’s hat with face and neck cover, and finally a large sword.” An undercover police officer befriended Abu online and met him twice in person; during their conversations, Abu stated that he was attempting to acquire firearms.

On the morning of his arrest on June 9, Abu commented, “we need a 9/11 2.0,” in a group message, alluding to the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center.

After seizing his phone, investigators “found dozens of messages, including video and voice messages, where Abu recited lyrics which reflected his extremist views.” In these lyrics, Abu referred to himself as a “straight ISIS supporter” and stated, “[G]ot my suicide vest, one click boom and I’ll see you later.” The investigation also revealed that he spent time browsing and downloading ISIS-related propaganda.

Sahayb Abu’s brother, Muhamed Abu, was also arrested and was charged with failing to disclose information about acts of terrorism. However, he was found not guilty of these charges.

Sahayb Abu will be sentenced by April 9.
