Jurist Kremlin claims Kyiv attempted to assassinate Putin with overnight drone attack, vows retaliation for ‘act of terror’

The Kremlin press service said Wednesday that Kyiv had deployed drones to the Kremlin the night prior in an attempt to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Two unmanned aerial vehicles were aimed at the Kremlin. As a result of efficient actions taken by military and special operations services using radar systems, the devices were taken out of action. No casualties or material damage resulted from their fall and the resulting scattering of debris across the Kremlin’s territory. We regard these actions as a planned terrorist act and an assassination attempt on the President … The Russian side reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it deems necessary.

From a 1999 series of apartment bombings that served as a pretext for the second Chechen war and cemented his path to power, to accusations that “neo-Nazis” in Kyiv had been engaged in a years-long genocidal campaign before invading Ukraine last year, Putin has frequently faced accusations of false accusations of terrorism as as a means of advancing his political aims.
