As part of the continued expansion of JURIST’s global legal news coverage, JURIST launched a section dedicated to long-form journalism and explainers on Wednesday.

JURIST’s new Features section will dive deeper into the enduring legal issues of our time, providing nuanced perspectives and insights from newsmakers and others at the frontlines. Explainers will serve as easily digestible explanations of some of the more complex legal issues underpinning our global news cycle. Our first feature is an in-depth look at the situation facing the Uighurs in Western China and is accompanied by an explainer on the international community’s responsibilities in the face of genocide.

The new section is being led by Features Editor Ingrid Burke (Pitt Law ’11). Burke joined JURIST during her 1L year and served as Managing Editor in 2010-2011. Leveraging her Russian language skills after graduation, she moved into full-time journalism, working variously with RIA Novosti in Moscow as Deputy Chief of International News, The Moscow Times as Deputy News Editor and Italian political news magazine L’Indro as Russia Correspondent. She is currently based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she splits her time between JURIST and a research fellowship at Harvard University’s Davis Center for Russian & Eurasian Studies.

As JURIST expands these sections, we welcome feedback from our readers, particularly with respect to topics they would like us to explore in this new expanded format. Suggestions and inquiries can be addressed to Burke at iburke@jurist.org.
