The Italian government has approved a decree that extends the scope of the country’s green pass system and requires anyone over the age of 50 living in Italy to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Italy’s green pass system, which has been in place since October 15, currently requires all workers to present a green pass to access their workplace by showing that they have been vaccinated, tested negative, or recovered from COVID-19. Under this new law, approved last week, people over 50 will have to have a super green pass, which is only obtained through being vaccinated or having recovered from the virus.
Additionally, the government announced they are expanding the scope of the green pass to make it compulsory for those accessing personal services and public offices such as hairdressers, banks, and post offices.
Italian officials hope these new measures slow the spread of COVID-19 within the workplace, schools, and higher education institutes, in addition to providing greater protection to those at higher risk of exposure and hospitalization.
