Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday said that Iran plans to cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog despite restrictions imposed by its Parliament. He also emphasised that entering its bombed nuclear sites posed security and safety issues.
The Iranian parliament previously passed a law requiring the government to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) because the agency “plays a role in preparing for war and aggression” by Israel. According to Abbas Araghchi, all future Iranian cooperation with the IAEA will be carried out through the country’s Supreme National Security Council. He stated that “Iran has been a committed member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty” and that IAEA’s request for continued cooperation with Iran will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Regarding the issue of IAEA inspections of the nuclear sites, Abbas Araghchi stressed that the risks of radioactive materials spreading and the remaining munitions exploding are serious, which necessitates closer examination.
Iran is a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Under the NPT, Iran is obliged not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons. However, according to a report published by the IAEA in June, Iran has sharply accelerated its production of highly enriched uranium at 60 percent concentration, which is sufficient to rapidly produce weapon-grade uranium for the production of multiple nuclear weapons in a short period. Despite this, Iranian government agencies and officials have frequently asserted that the country is not seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Last month, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) attacked military and nuclear facilities in Iran. Following the Israeli attacks, the United States bombed three Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan on June 22.
