If you sent Bitcoin to a seller who disappeared immediately after receiving payment, stop sending money and preserve the evidence from the transaction. If the seller never delivered the item or service and has stopped responding, you need to establish what happened to your payment and whether the available records reveal useful investigative leads.

Even if the seller has deleted their account or blocked you, your Bitcoin transaction may still provide a starting point for investigating the movement of funds.

Crestforte Intelligence can examine your transaction trail, assess possible leads, and help you understand what the available evidence may mean for your recovery options.

1. Preserve the Seller’s Details

Before you lose access to the marketplace conversation, save the information connecting the seller to your payment.

Keep screenshots of the product listing, seller profile, username, messages, agreed price, delivery promises, and payment instructions. Save any email confirmations, invoices, website links, and records of your attempts to contact the seller after payment.

The fact that a seller disappeared is concerning, but preserving the original agreement helps establish whether the payment was made for something that was never delivered.

2. Find Your Bitcoin Transaction ID

Open the wallet or exchange you used to send the payment and locate the transaction ID, commonly called the TXID.

Record the following:

• The TXID and receiving Bitcoin address.
• The amount sent and date of payment.
• The transaction’s confirmation status.
• Any exchange withdrawal records associated with the transfer.

You can enter the TXID into a reputable Bitcoin block explorer to inspect the transaction on the public blockchain.

If the transaction is confirmed, you generally cannot reverse it yourself. However, the record can help establish the destination of your payment and provide a basis for further investigation.

3. Examine Where the Bitcoin Went

Do not stop at the first receiving address. If the seller transferred the Bitcoin elsewhere, subsequent transactions may reveal additional addresses and patterns that warrant examination.

The purpose of tracing is to understand the movement of funds and identify potentially useful leads. A blockchain address does not automatically reveal the seller’s real identity, and tracing alone cannot guarantee that funds can be frozen or returned.

The transaction evidence should be assessed alongside the seller’s profile, payment instructions, and communications.

4. Avoid Sending More Money

If the seller suddenly reappears demanding a delivery fee, verification charge, customs payment, or another deposit, verify the claim independently before taking any action. Do not send additional Bitcoin simply because the seller promises to deliver your purchase afterward.

Report the incident to the marketplace, if applicable, and the exchange or service involved in the payment. You can also report suspected fraud to the appropriate law enforcement or cybercrime authority.

5. Find Out Whether Your Payment Leaves an Investigative Lead

You do not need to understand the entire blockchain yourself. Start with your TXID, the receiving address, the amount paid, and the evidence showing what the seller promised.

Crestforte Intelligence can examine your Bitcoin transaction trail, organize your wallet and payment evidence, assess possible leads in the movement of funds, and help you understand what the findings may mean for your recovery options.

The seller may have disappeared, but you can still investigate the payment. Preserve your evidence, establish where the Bitcoin went, and determine what the available records can actually tell you.
