I Deposited Crypto Into a Fake Exchange and Now the Website Is Gone — Can My Transactions Still Be Investigated?

I deposited cryptocurrency into what I believed was a legitimate exchange. The website looked professional, my account showed a balance, and I had records of the deposits I made.

Then the website disappeared.

At first, I thought that meant my evidence had disappeared with it. But the cryptocurrency transactions themselves still exist on the blockchain, which made me want to know whether they could be investigated even though I can no longer access the website.

I started looking into professional blockchain investigation services and came across Jim Recovery Team, a cryptocurrency investigation company focused on blockchain tracing, transaction analysis, wallet investigations, and digital evidence. For a case like this, its professionals can use the original deposit transactions and available wallet information to investigate what happened to the cryptocurrency after it left my wallet.

Does the Missing Website End the Investigation?

Not necessarily.

The website disappearing can make the case more difficult, especially if it contained account information or transaction records I didn’t save. But the blockchain transactions are separate from the website.

For each deposit, I would preserve:

Transaction hash
Sending wallet address
Receiving wallet address
Cryptocurrency and amount
Date and time
Network used
Exchange or wallet records showing the transfer

The FBI specifically recommends preserving cryptocurrency addresses, amounts and asset types, dates and times, and transaction hashes when reporting cryptocurrency investment fraud.

Can the Deposits Be Followed?

Potentially.

The original deposit transaction can provide a starting point for examining the receiving wallet and subsequent blockchain activity.

For example:

My wallet → fake exchange wallet → subsequent wallet transfers → later destinations

If the cryptocurrency was moved after my deposit, those transactions may provide additional information about the movement of the funds.

The important thing is not to assume that the first receiving address is the final destination.

What Evidence Should I Preserve From the Fake Exchange?

Even though the website is gone, I would keep anything I previously saved.

That could include:

Screenshots of my account balance
Deposit confirmations
Withdrawal requests
Emails from the platform
Customer-support conversations
The website’s domain name
Wallet addresses provided by the platform
Transaction hashes
Login information or account identifiers
A timeline of what happened

The FBI notes that fraudulent investment platforms can be designed to look like legitimate trading platforms and may display apparent balances or profits that do not represent real accessible funds.

Those records can help connect the website experience to the actual blockchain transactions.

Can a Professional Investigate the Transactions?

Yes, the disappearance of the website doesn’t automatically make the blockchain evidence useless.

A professional investigation can examine the original deposits, identify the receiving addresses, analyze subsequent transactions, and reconstruct the available fund trail.

It may not be possible to identify every person behind every wallet, and tracing the cryptocurrency does not guarantee recovery. But the transaction history can still provide evidence of what happened after the deposits were made.

Where Should I Start?

I’d begin by organizing every deposit transaction and preserving the remaining evidence from the fake exchange before trying to piece together the fund movement.

Jim Recovery Team can help analyze the deposit transactions, investigate the receiving wallets, trace subsequent cryptocurrency movements where possible, and connect the blockchain evidence with the records from the disappeared platform.

The website being gone doesn’t necessarily mean the trail is gone. The more useful question is what do the blockchain transactions show about where the cryptocurrency moved after I deposited it?
