How to Investigate Crypto Transactions From a Compromised Wallet

When a crypto wallet is compromised, the first question is usually not “Can I get my money back?” It is what actually happened to my cryptocurrency after it left the wallet?

An unauthorized transaction can be investigated by starting with the wallet activity and reconstructing the movement of the funds. Jim Recovery Team is a cryptocurrency investigation and blockchain tracing firm that can examine compromised-wallet transactions, analyze the receiving addresses, and map subsequent fund movements to build a clearer picture of what happened.

Start With the Unauthorized Transaction

The investigation normally begins with identifying the transaction you did not authorize.

Useful information can include:

Your compromised wallet address
The receiving wallet address
Transaction ID or hash
Cryptocurrency involved
Amount transferred
Date and time
Any subsequent transactions

These details are important because a blockchain investigation needs a reliable starting point. The FBI specifically identifies cryptocurrency addresses, transaction amounts and types, dates and times, and transaction hashes as important information when reporting cryptocurrency fraud.

You do not necessarily need to understand blockchain technology yourself. If you have the transaction information, a professional investigator can determine which parts of the transaction history are relevant.

Follow What Happened to the Funds

The first receiving wallet may not be where the cryptocurrency ultimately ended up.

A transaction trail might look something like:

Compromised wallet → Receiving address → Second wallet → Additional addresses → Exchange or other service

Investigating those subsequent transactions can help establish how the cryptocurrency moved after the unauthorized transfer.

However, tracing a wallet does not automatically reveal the real-world identity of whoever controls it. The purpose of blockchain analysis is to reconstruct transaction activity and identify connections or investigative leads supported by the available evidence.

Preserve More Than Just the Blockchain Data

The transaction itself is only part of the investigation.

Keep screenshots, wallet notifications, exchange records, emails, messages, suspicious websites, usernames, phone numbers, and anything else connected to the compromise. The FBI advises victims to provide communications, domains, applications, exchange information, and the timeline of the incident alongside transaction details when reporting cryptocurrency fraud.

If you don’t have every transaction detail, don’t assume the case cannot be investigated. The FBI says victims should still report with whatever information they have.

What Can You Do Next?

If the wallet has been compromised, avoid sending additional funds to anyone claiming they can immediately unlock or recover the stolen cryptocurrency.

You can also file a report with the appropriate authorities, including the FBI’s IC3 where applicable, using the transaction information and supporting evidence you preserved.

For a professional blockchain investigation, Jim Recovery Team can review the available wallet and transaction evidence, investigate the fund movement, and assess what the transaction history may reveal.

If you want your specific incident reviewed, you can contact the firm at [email protected] or +1 (929) 399-9264 via WhatsApp and provide the information you have. You don’t need to reconstruct the entire blockchain yourself; the investigation can begin with the evidence already available to you.
