Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in the Iranian capital Tehran on Thursday morning, according to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard-affiliated Tasnim news agency. Hamas immediately accused Israel of the killing in a statement.
Haniyeh had previously claimed the office of Palestinian Prime Minister following the Hamas-Fatah split, and he continued to hold Hamas leadership positions until his death. He was one of three senior Hamas figures whom ICC Prosecutor Karim AA Khan sought an arrest warrant for in connection with the October 7 attacks.
Though Israel has not commented on the assassination, back in 2006, then-Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz warned that Haniyeh would not be “immune” from a targeted killing if Hamas perpetrated terror attacks in Israel.
Israel previously assassinated Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in 2004. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated at the time that Yassin was responsible for numerous deadly terrorist attacks.
