On Thursday, in his letter titled “The Cup of Blood,” the Haitian ombudsman expressed that the failure to shed light on the assassination of the 48th President of Haiti, Jovenil Moïse, will lead to a train of violence. The letter was published on account of the second anniversary of the assassination. The Office De La Protection Du Citoyen (OPC) expressed that the larger scheme of violence caused the assassination and the failure to bring justice and will only lead to more violence in the country.
The crisis in Haiti arose from the protests, which primarily started due to allegations of senior officials involved in corruption in an oil deal with Venezuela. The economic and political instability and corruption have turned into a fertile ground for gang violence to take over the country of Haiti. Gang violence has taken over the capital, and human rights violence is becoming more frequent and ruthless following their efforts to expand their territory. The state forces have been outnumbered and overpowered by the gangs unleashing violence in Haiti. Amnesty International verified the use of excessive force by the police on the protesters and flagged the issue of human rights violations.
The New York Times reported that when Moïse was killed, he possessed a list of Haitian politicians and businesspersons involved in the drug trade and was about to transfer it to the American government. At the same time, dozens were killed in the ongoing probe in Haiti, but the investigation is slow-moving, and the authorities are yet to find out why Moïse was killed. The document was reportedly part of a larger clash between Moïse and the country’s powerful business and political figures.
There has been no progress in the investigation into the assassination in the country, and the investigation has not been published. The Haitian ombudsman believes that the extreme delay of justice, in this case, will only add fuel to the fire of gang violence in the country.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also expressed grave concerns over the violence spiraling out of control in Haiti. The United Nations has reported that Haiti needs international support to tackle the worsening crisis. In May, the UN Commissioner for Human Rights warned against a “never-ending cycle of violence” in Haiti after releasing a quarterly report on the island nation.
