The Delhi police Sunday arrested Aumkareshwar Thakur, a Madhya Pradesh man who is the alleged creator of Sulli Deals, an app that provided photographs of Muslim women for auction without their consent.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police KPS Malhotra, Thakur was apprehended by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) of Delhi Police, brought into custody, and then interrogated. During interrogation, Thakur was said to have told police that in January of 2020, he joined a group called “Trade Mahasabha” using the Twitter handle “gangescion.” During their discussions, the members planned different ways to troll and manipulate Muslim women. Based on these plans, Thakur admitted that he had developed Sulli Deals on Github.

Commissioner Malhotra has said that:

He had developed the code on GitHub. The access of GitHub was with all the members of the group. He had shared the app on his Twitter account. The photos of the Muslim women were uploaded by the group members.
The Commissioner also stated that Thakur “admitted that he had developed the code on GitHub,” and after there was a significant uproar due to the app, Thakur said he “had deleted all his social media footprints.”

Thakur is the first arrest made in the “Sulli Deals” app case. However, arrests have been made in cases similar to Sulli Deals, particularly the “Bulli Bai” case. Bulli Bai is a similar app to Sulli Deals and was created by Niraj Bishnoi, who alleged that he was in contact with the creator of the Sulli Deals app.
