Police arrested and detained journalist and activist Israel Frey on Wednesday in Tel Aviv after the State Attorney’s office opened a criminal investigation on accusations of inciting terrorism over a social media post on X. A Tel Aviv court on Thursday extended Frey’s detention by three days, reported the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
“Israeli authorities’ arrest of journalist Israel Frey underscores authorities’ growing intolerance of freedom of expression since the start of the war on October 7, 2023,” said CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah. “Israeli authorities must immediately release Frey and all detained Palestinian journalists, and end their ongoing crackdown on the press and dissenting voices.”
Following the news that an explosive device in northern Gaza killed five Israeli soldiers, Frey tweeted, “The world is a better place this morning without five young men who participated in one of the most horrific crimes against humanity.” Frey’s attorneys, Riham Nassra and Michal Pomeranz, told CPJ that the tweet does not legally constitute support for terrorism, describing the incident as a “political arrest.”
The State Attorney’s office responded to CPJ’s request for comment with a copy of the court document about the case. The police and the Ministry of National Security issued a joint statement saying they would “deal firmly with anyone who incites or expresses support for the enemy.”
On October 16, 2023, Frey went into hiding after a mob of far-right Israelis attacked his home in response to his expressions of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. CPJ has documented Israeli authorities’ arrests of 85 Palestinian journalists since the start of the Israel-Gaza war on October 7, 2023. This is the first time in that period that Israeli authorities have arrested and opened an investigation against an Israeli journalist for expressing an opinion.
The incident comes amid broader concerns about press freedom in Israel. Last month, CPJ criticized new Israeli Government directives requiring foreign media and individuals to obtain military approval before reporting from combat zones or missile impact areas. CPJ and other press organizations have condemned the measures as an escalation of censorship and intimidation, warning they severely undermine independent reporting and public accountability.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, the Israeli military campaign has resulted in at least 57,882 deaths and 138,095 injuries since October 7, 2023.
