China announced sanctions on Thursday against two US entities, including General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems, over the two entities’ involvement in selling weapons to Taiwan.

China decided to impose general sanctions against the two entities involved in selling weapons to Taiwan. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems is a subsidiary of General Atomics that designs and manufactures unmanned aerial vehicles and radar systems for the US military and commercial applications around the world. General Dynamics Land Systems is a manufacturer of military vehicles such as tanks and lighter armored fighting vehicles.

According to the Thursday statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the US continues to sell arms to Taiwan in violation of the One China policy and provisions of the Three Joint Communiqués. As a result, the US’s actions interfere with China’s internal affairs and damage China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The first communiqué states that both countries agree to respect each other’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The second communiqué states that the US recognizes that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government of China. The third communiqué reaffirms the statements made about the Taiwan issue in the previous communiqués.

China previously warned the US to cease the passage of military ships in the Taiwan Strait in January. A spokesperson for the PRC Ministry of National Defense stated that the US must “stop abusing international law,” and “cease all dangerous provocations.” The statement was in response to the passage of a US naval destroyer through the politically sensitive area.

According to Article 3 of the Anti-foreign Sanctions Law of China, when a foreign country in violation of international law and basic norms of international relations contains or suppresses China under various pretexts or pursuant to its own laws, adopts discriminatory restrictive measures against any Chinese citizen or organization, and meddles in China’s internal affairs, China shall have the right to adopt corresponding countermeasures. Furthermore, Article 4 stipulates that the relevant departments of the State Council may decide to adopt several measures against the individuals and organizations in the countermeasure list, including prohibiting or restricting organizations and individuals in the territory of China from carrying out relevant transactions, cooperation, and other activities with them.
