Chilean President Sebastián Piñera announced on Friday that Chile will hold a referendum on how to change the constitution. The referendum comes as a result of the protests that have been going on for weeks over the raised subway fare.
Citizens will have the chance to vote on who will write the new constitution. They will choose between a mixed constitutional convention that would be made up of legislators and elected citizens or a constitutional convention made up of 100 elected citizens.
The vote will be held in April 2020 with an additional vote in October 2020 to vote on the people who will make up the constitutional convention.
