Canada’s government introduced legislation Monday implementing stronger gun control. The “national freeze” legislation will ban the ability “to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada.” It will likewise address gun violence associated with domestic violence, gender-based violence, and self-harm by creating a “red flag” law that would enable courts to confiscate guns from people considered a danger to themselves or others.

The new legislation, introduced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, would be the strongest gun reform bill in over four decades. Prime Minister Trudeau introduced the bill in a press conference where he discussed the regulations his government already introduced, including a ban on assault-style weapons, and discussed his government’s proposed legislation. Canada’s House of Commons and Senate need to pass the legislation before it becomes law.

This measure comes after the United States is reeling from another incident of gun violence. Last Tuesday, at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, a lone gunman killed 19 students and two teachers. The shooting has reignited old debates about the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms, and bans on assault weapons.
