Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday that all assault-style weapons would be banned effective immediately.

Following the deaths of 22 people in a mass shooting in Nova Scotia last week, Trudeau announced that there is “no place for such weapons in Canada.” The person responsible for the attack was armed with semi automatic riffles, which can be described as military assault riffles. The ban will prevent selling, transport and import of around 1,500 models in a bid toward gun control in Canada.

Currently the Firearms Act does not define “military style weapons,” so this is a distinction that will need to be made under the new regulations. The Liberal Party pledged to ban military assault weapons in their election campaign. However, Andrew Scheer, leader of the Conservative Party commented that “taking away from law-abiding citizens does nothing to stop dangerous criminals who obtain their guns illegally.”
