The federal police of Brazil on Thursday indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro alongside 36 individuals accused of crimes of violent abolition of the Democratic State of Law, coup d’état, and criminal organization in an attempt to keep the former President in power after the 2022 elections results.

The police said that the list of the indicted persons was made public with the approval of the Supreme Federal Court in order to avoid the circulation of false information concerning the investigations.

Among the indicted individuals are former ministers under Bolsonaro, Anderson Gustavo Torres (Justice and Public Security), Augusto Heleno Ribeiro Pereira (Institutional Security), and Walter Braga Netto (Defense and the Civil House).

According to the Federal Police, evidence was obtained through several police investigations conducted over almost two years, based on breaking telematic, telephone, banking, tax confidentiality, plea bargains, searches, and seizures, among other measures authorized by the Judiciary. Following the conclusion of the investigations, a final report was sent to the Supreme Federal Court with the indictment of 37 people.

The former president’s indictment also relates to his involvement in the riots that occurred on January 8, 2023, which were allegedly an attempt to maintain Bolsonaro in power and reverse the election outcome illegitimately. Previously, he had also been indicted for falsifying his vaccination record to get false vaccination certificates that allowed them to travel to the US during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bolsonaro has, however, criticized Brazil’s Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes, saying in a recent post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, “Alexandre de Moraes does not attack Bolsonaro, but rather democracy.” According to Metrópoles, after the indictment, Bolsonaro accused Moraes of adjusting statements, arresting without reporting, and fishing for evidence while leading the investigation.
