The Belgium federal prosecutor’s office on Tuesday announced the arrest of three Rwandan individuals who were charged with serious international law violations linked to the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
The 1994 genocide resulted in the death of an estimated 800,000 Tutsi, Twa and moderate Hutu people in Rwanda between April 7 and July 15, 1994. In June, the Paris Court of Appeals affirmed a decision to transfer the primary financier of the genocide and Africa’s most wanted man, Felicien Kabuga, to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals for trial. All of this action follows calls from genocide survivors to accelerate international justice.
The three individuals were reportedly arrested following police searches on September 29 and 30 in Brussels and the Belgian province. The federal police of Brussels are conducting investigations pertaining to the arrests.
