Justice for the Victims of the 1988 Massacre in Iran (JVMI) on Friday urged the United Nations to prevent the Iranian government’s rising campaign of politically motivated killings. More than 300 global personalities supported the plea, including UN experts, Nobel laureates, former ambassadors, judges, legal scholars, and human rights organizations.
The coalition condemned Iran’s systematic execution of political prisoners, describing it as a grave violation of international human rights law. The statement particularly noted that the executions violate Articles 7 and 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which prohibit torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and guarantee the right to a fair trial. The signatories called for an immediate halt to the executions of two individuals, Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentences and denied their request for judicial review.
The two men were convicted on charges including being members of the political group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, engaging in “propaganda in support of the organisation,” and “preparing and sending videos.” The Iranian regime labels these offenses as “enmity against God” and “corruption on earth.” Their five-minute trial on August 10, 2024, has drawn widespread condemnation, including a call from Amnesty International for their immediate release. Moreover, Iranian dissidents previously held protests outside the UN’s European headquarters in Geneva.
Additionally, Abolhassan Montazer, Akbar Daneshvarkar, Babak Alipour, Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi, Pouya Ghobadi, Vahid Bani Amerian, Pakhshan Azizi, Verisheh Moradi, Sharifeh Mohammadi, and many others have been transferred to Qezel Hesar Prison, a facility notorious for executions. According to the 2024 Annual Report, Iran executed at least 975 individuals, marking a 17 percent increase from the previous year. The executions disproportionately targeted women, juvenile offenders, ethnic and religious minorities, and political dissidents. Critics have emphasized that such targeting reflects a clear attempt to silence opposition and prevent demands for democratic change.
Consequently, the signatories of the statement urgently requested the prompt action of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, pertinent UN organizations, and democratic governments to stop the executions of political prisoners in Iran. They called for sanctions on Iranian officials accountable for human rights abuses and asserted that the elimination of the death penalty and the freeing of political prisoners must be prerequisites for any enhancement in relations with Iran.
The ongoing systematic targeting of political prisoners by Iranian authorities reflects not only the perpetuation of a culture of impunity but also a chilling reminder of past atrocities, particularly the 1988 massacre, which was reported by UN Special Rapporteur Prof. Javaid Rehman. His report found that these mass killings constituted crimes against humanity and genocide. Currently, at least 50 political prisoners are facing executions, including three women and six protesters from the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising.
