Various diplomatic premises of the Republic of Venezuela were attacked in several countries, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto said on Monday.
Images of the alleged vandalism released by Gil Pinto, show a Venezuelan flag hanging from a building spray-painted with the word Edmundo, the first name of the opposition candidate Edmundo González. González has been recognized by several governments as the legitimate winner of Venezuela’s presidential election in July. Other images show spray-painted walls, a burning balcony with another flag, and photos attached to the fence, presumably the one around the diplomatic facility.
Venezuela’s Foreign Minister stated that these actions were coordinated by “Los Comanditos”, one of the links of the Venezuelan opposition. Gil Pinto claimed that the main cause of aggression is fascist hatred, which has been inoculated, stimulated, and protected for years abroad. The evidence supporting such an accusation has not yet been provided.
Yvan Gil Pinto also called on the authorities of Portugal, Colombia, Germany, Spain, and Costa Rica to investigate the attacks, find the perpetrators, and guarantee the inviolability of Venezuela’s diplomatic facilities in accordance with the Vienna Convention of 1961.
The attack comes as a result of ongoing political unrest in Venezuela following its 2024 presidential election which has been deemed controversial. The election was characterized by a crackdown on political opposition, a mismatch between the results of the votes released by the National Electoral Council and the opposition’s counts, and protests against the results both inside and outside the country. Other countries’ reactions towards the election results are also mixed, as some countries recognized Gonzalez’s victory while others rejected the results and called for investigations.
To date, the political situation in Venezuela remains unstable. A recent report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) includes evidence of human rights violations in Venezuela following the presidential election, including government interference and manipulation of the electoral process, as well as the use of violence, crackdown on dissent and repression against the opposition and demonstrators.
