Minh Quang Pham, a member of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), was sentenced Tuesday to 44 years in prison for plotting a terrorist attack at London’s Heathrow Airport in 2011. The sentence was handed down by Judge Richard Berman of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
According to prosecutors, Pham traveled to Yemen in 2010 to join AQAP and received training to wage jihad or holy war. In 2011, Pham, also known as “Amim,” along with AQAP leader al-Aulaqi, planned a suicide attack at Heathrow Airport in London, with specific plans to target arrivals from the US and Israel. However, he was detained at arrival, with UK authorities recovering several weapons and explosives from his person.
Although Pham is a UK citizen, he was extradited to the US in 2015 and indicted on charges of terrorism and using firearms to commit violence. He pleaded guilty to terrorism charges in 2016 and was sentenced to 40 years in prison, which was affirmed by the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. His conviction was eventually vacated in light of Supreme Court precedent, but in 2021, a grand jury reinstated the charges against Pham and also levied new charges, resulting in his conviction in May 2023.
US Attorney Danielle Sassoon stated that “Minh Quang Pham’s actions were not just an affront to the safety of this country, but to the principles of peace and security that we hold dear. Today’s sentencing underscores our collective resolve to stop terrorism before it occurs, and place would-be terrorists in prison.”
