The US Department of State Friday imposed further sanctions against Myanmar, joining other nations in their efforts to condemn human rights violations and violence occurring in the country in the two years since the military coup.
The sanctions apply to two individuals and six entities, according to a statement released by the US Department of State. The individuals are Tun Min Latt, a Burmese businessman, and his spouse Win Min Soe. The sanctions also cover three entities that Latt controls or owns.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said of the sanctions, “The actions we are taking today further align with those taken by Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.”
The US Department of the Treasury is also issuing sanctions and a Sanctions Alert on Burma jet fuel. The alert will inform individuals, businesses and others of the sanctions against the jet fuel. The alert will also discuss the risks associated with the jet fuel being supplied to the Myanmar military regime. The action comes after a human rights group issued a report in February condemning the US’s inconsistent treatment of Myanmar’s junta, especially regarding the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), which the junta controls.
