A US Congressional report published on Wednesday is calling for sanctions on China over human rights violations. The report notes violations in many areas, including human trafficking and freedom of expression issues.
The report points to a renewed level of religious persecution against Muslims, who are also noted to be one of the groups more often trafficked.
The report also points to the Hong Kong protests and the government’s reaction to them as a point of concern—in particular, their persecution of the leaders of the protest.
Congress urges the president to issue a policy directive embedding human rights, rule of law and democratic governance into the critical mission of the government. They also state that the president’s strategy, “should include expanding efforts within the U.S. Government to counter disinformation, coercive political influence operations, and censorship efforts, particularly those targeting diaspora communities.”
