During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, UN agencies warned on Monday that escalating hunger and displacement crises worldwide threaten global economic stability, urging governments and business leaders to take action.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) noted that nearly 318 million people worldwide were facing a crisis-level hunger, with many living in famine conditions in various regions, including Sudan, Haiti, and Gaza. Recent funding cuts have further exacerbated the situation, significantly reducing humanitarian organizations’ ability to reach those in need.

According to Rania Dagash-Kamara, WFP assistant executive director for Partnerships and Innovation, hunger has been the primary cause of displacement and conflict, threatening not only individual lives but also disrupting markets in which businesses operate. Experts urged business leaders to account for global food insecurity, preserve livelihoods and stabilize fragile markets through measures such as supply chain investment and innovative decision-making.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) pointed out that while migration flows have persistently increased, political and business leaders should view it as a driver of growth and provide long-lasting solutions for displacement that respect national sovereignty and human rights. The IOM called for diasporas and private companies to build partnerships that support business growth, promote new job creation and help communities become more self-reliant.

In recent years, the world has experienced numerous armed conflicts and climate-related disasters, resulting in widespread famine and mass displacement. Sudan currently faces one of the largest displacement crises, with 13.6 million people displaced, while the ongoing conflict subjects civilians to severe conditions, including disease and starvation. South Sudan has also suffered an unprecedented displacement crisis, with millions fleeing their homes or the country due to escalating violence.

The UN has previously warned of a future major global hunger emergency, adding that food insecurity is expected to worsen and place millions of lives at risk.
